SYLLABUS CHANGES 2022 * 2023 * 2024

MAJOR CHANGES
– Regulations – clear and concise rules to support a fair playing field for all participants
– Ages – increased number of age categories in several class groupings
– Grade Levels – added more grade levels
– Gender specific titles have been replaced with musical and age appropriate ones
– Removal of test pieces – entries have drastically dropped in these classes
– Removal of references to senior, intermediate, junior, elementary and primary divisions. References are now by specific age groups
– Speech arts is now called spoken word
– Addition of non-competitive classes for students who want a performance opportunity only. These are for adjudication only, no mark given
– Addition of workshop classes for all students and these classes are non-competitive. These are for adjudication only, no mark given
– Addition of Provincial tab – all provincial classes are listed in one location along with the scholarship
– Addition of Canada West Excellence classes, also listed in one location
– Grievance committee – comprised of district festival president and one other committee member along with the president of the provincial association constitute a grievance committee to act at any festival, should the need arise.
Unresolved protests may be directed to the provincial office c/o the SMFA president, along with a $50 fee.

PROVINCIAL ELIGIBILITY
– Now listed separately with corresponding scholarship
– Competitors must place 1st in the class with a mark of 88 or higher. No adjudicator recommendation needed.
– If 1st place has a mark of 89 and 2nd has a mark of 88, both competitors are qualified to enter provincials
– Must perform at least 2 solo classes in the same discipline to qualify for provincials
– Competitors are eligible to be a district winner from one or more district festivals, providing the classes are not in the same provincial scholarship class. You can enter the same class in more than one festival but can only qualify for the same scholarship from one festival.

CANADA WEST EXCELLENCE CLASSES
– Comprised of festivals from BC, Alberta and Saskatchewan. It will be held in rotation with Saskatchewan hosting in 2022.
– Competitors wishing to represent Saskatchewan at the Canada West Performing Arts Festival (CWPAF) must first enter these classes at the district level
– Age categories are 12 years and under, 17 years and under and 24 years and under
– These classes will receive an adjudication as well as a mark.
– Competitors must perform a well rounded program by various composers representing a variety of styles and periods. Time limits of 15 minutes for 12 and under, 20 minutes for 17 and under and up to 40 minutes for 24 and under
(check the syllabus as this differs depending on the discipline) reflect the amount of repertoire needed to enter these classes.
– First and second place district festival winners, receiving a mark of 88 or higher are eligible to enter the Canada West/Excellence Performing level.
– Each district festival is allowed two district winners to the provincial finals for each of the Canada West /Excellence classes
– Team Saskatchewan, chosen by the adjudicators at the provincial final competition, will have the opportunity to compete at the CWPAF.

GENERAL GUIDELINES
The same selection may not be used in more than one class in the same festival, with the exception of the Canada West Performing Arts Festival Classes and the Non-Competitive Workshop classes.
EXAMPLE – you cannot enter class 10321 piano solo recital piece 12 & under (P) and also class 20307 piano solo recital piece 12 and under
