| Helga Lutke Medd was born and raised in Dalmeny, Saskatchewan. She excelled in keyboard instruments at an early age, winning many awards in piano competitions, including the Kinsman Piano Competition in the 1950s. She became a classroom teacher and music specialist. She was honoured to have her class sing for Queen Elizabeth II while she taught in Northern British Columbia. She went on to become a driving force in the Fresno, California music community. She was especially passionate about early childhood music and therefore initiated the Helga Lutke Medd ‘ I Love A Piano’ Award to be given to a junior piano student who shows enjoyment of music and has not received any other award. Since Helga passed away in June, 2024, her friends will continue to fund this award in honour of her legacy. | |

In order to maintain a high standard of excellence, the Musical Distinction awards will only be given out if the competitor meets the following requirements:
1. Competitor must be performing at a minimum Grade 8 level.
2. Competitor must have placed first or second in a minimum of two solo classes in the stated discipline (not including own compositions, improvisation, or popular music) with the highest two marks averaging 87% or higher.
3. To consider overall musicianship, the adjudicator may take into consideration other performances by the competitor such as duets, own compositions, improvisation, and popular music, even though they cannot be considered for the marks average.
4. Other considerations could be level of difficulty and number of entries.
Awards will be reviewed annually. If you have any concerns, please contact a member of the executive.
